On December 8th, the EU reached a provisional political agreement on the AI Act (AIA). This was seen by many as a make-or-break moment for the EU’s ambition to “become a global leader in trustworthy AI”. The AIA represents the first comprehensive and legally binding cross-sector framework for AI, including General Purpose AI (GPAI), from a major global economy. Using a risk-based – but prescriptive approach – it will regulate AI based on the potential risks of specific models or application.
